Identification, quantification and management of risks of public water-supply systems

Annotation of the project

The aim of the project is to develop a methodology for identification, quantification and management of risks that may occur in drinking water production. The methodology will be based on implementation of the general theory of risk analysis and management. Hazards that may either affect water quality or interrupt the service will be specially focused on. In the frame of the project the HACCP (Hazard Analysis at Critical Control Points) methodology will be implemented for drinking water treatment and distribution processes. The HACCP approach which has been used in food industry for many years is recommended for using in the water-supply industry by the WHO and the EC. The project will be solved in coordination with two large EU projects COST Action C19 (EU FP5) and TECHNEAU (EU FP6).

A methodology for risk management and risk analysis of generally any type of public drinking-water supply system will be the project output. The best practice operational and hygiene approaches and standards will be described here as well as recommendations for innovation changes in water-treatment and water distribution technologies. The general goal is to achieve a higher level of drinking water quality and safety.

Developed methodologies will be continuously consulted with water utility operators and tested on few real water-supply systems. Results and outputs of the project will be presented on specialized workshops. In the last year of the project solving an international conference will be organised to present the project outputs.

    The research works are organised into eight particular work packages (PM) that are aimed to fulfil the four partial goals of the project (DC). Works on each PM are formally coordinated by its coordinator (institution) and the research is led by its PM leader. The time-dependency of the particular PMs and DCs illustrates the following time schedule.

    Works on module PM3 will be coordinated with running local research project OC130, so called RADWAS, and also with the EU FP5 research project COST Action C19 "Proactive Crisis Management of Urban Infrastructure". Both of them deals with identification of technical (technological) hazards that generate risks in the distribution part of the water-supply system (water mains, reservoirs, pumping stations). Members of the Brno University research team have been actively participating in the projects since their beginning and the gained information and research outputs will be used for the needs of the project WaterRisk.
